Christmas Message

Wednesday 23rd December 2009

Well, it's time for me to take a holiday of my own. I wish I could say that I was jetting off to sunnier climbs for Christmas, but I am flying back to the UK today to spend Christmas and the new year with my lovely family.

Unfortunately that means beautyfactor.net will not be publishing any fresh content until around the 6th January.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my readers, new and old who have taken the time to leave their comments, send me emails and participated wherever they can.

Secondly I would like to show my thanks to our amazing guest bloggers, many of whom have turned out to be good friends.

Lastly I would just like to wish every single one of you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous, healthy and beautiful new year.

Thank you all for your support!

Make Up Removal

Tuesday 22nd December 2009

All of our guest bloggers have been released to spend time with their families and friends, which leaves me in the hot seat for today!

So I have found for you a short blog post from a cutesy little website called redhairandfreckles.net I hope you enjoy it.

Aside from retaining the cleanliness of your pillowcases, it is important to take off all makeup before going to sleep because it promotes better skin health as well.

According to dermatologists, sleeping with eye makeup and foundation on could cause zits and clog skin pores thus irritating the skin further. Also, the natural process of shedding skin is blocked by the ingredients of the makeup. This makes skin look dull when you wake up.

Skin experts added that it is best to spend a few minutes of your time every evening to seriously clean your skin without rushing through the ritual. Spend some time to check on the mirror if all the makeup has been removed.

One important aspect to check is your eye makeup. It’s really tricky to get rid of the entire substance in a quick wash so make sure that check the eyelashes for excess makeup.

Dermatologists said that if you rub your eyes before to sleep and discover that your eye suddenly feels itchy, chances are that they are still elements stuck in there.

In order to get rid of makeup, just use gentle cleanser or liquid soap and rinse with water.

See you again tomorrow!

10 Diet Tips To Survive The Holiday Season

Monday 21st December 2009

The Christmas holidays have finally arrived and with only four more sleeps until Santa arrives, it is so easy to get caught up in the glory and fanciful foods that Christmas brings.

If you are worried about sticking to your diet over the coming days, here is a collection of the best ten tips to help you stay guilt free.

1. Shop Smart for Healthy Holidays

Plan your menu to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, seafood, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

Consult the nutrition label to choose foods rich in nutrients but lower in fat, calories, and sugar.

To shave calories, go easy when adding nuts, cheese, cream sauces, gravy, butter, and whipped cream.

2. Start the Party Light

Most appetizers tend to be loaded with calories. And it is so easy to over eat them before the meal. Make it easier on your guests by offering light and satisfying appetizers. For tempting yet healthy appetizers, offer shrimp cocktails, whole-grain crackers with reduced-fat cheese, vegetables with a low-fat yogurt dip, or fresh fruit skewers.

3. Harness the Diet Power of Produce

Add more simple vegetable and fruit dishes to your menu instead of heavy dishes with sauces. Your guests will fill up on healthy fiber without lots of extra calories.

For example, green bean almandine with a squeeze of lemon is healthier than traditional green bean casserole. Simple peas or corn are healthier than creamed peas or corn. But if you must have casserole, use low-fat soup, increase the veggies, and top it with a crunchy whole-grain cereal instead of fried onions.

4. Go Frozen in Winter

Fresh is usually the best when fruits and vegetables are in season. But when prices are high in winter, head to the frozen food aisle.

“Frozen fruits and vegetables are usually less expensive and can be more nutritious because they are picked at their peak ripeness and frozen immediately” says American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Sarah Krieger, RD. Buy frozen produce in bags, use only what you need, and save more by not wasting spoiled produce.

Canned foods can also be a healthy option. Read the nutrition labels to find fruits and vegetables with less added sodium and sugar, Krieger says. Reduce the sodium and sugar solutions even more by rinsing the vegetable or fruit under cold water before you cook.

5. Respect Special Requests

As you plan your holiday menu, ask if guests have any food preferences or intolerance's. For example, a dear friend may be lactose intolerant. A favorite cousin may have cut red meat from his diet.

You can’t please everyone. But you can include a wide variety of healthy foods. Then, your guests can pick and choose, filling their plate with a satisfying meal no matter their food issue.

6. Shave Calories With Simple Swaps

Create healthier versions of your holiday favorites by shaving calories wherever you can.

“Simple swaps of lower-fat ingredients are easy ways to save calories -- and no one will even notice the difference” says Cheryl Forberg, RD, nutritionist for the television series, The Biggest Loser.

Use chicken stock, fat-free yogurt, light cream cheese, and low-fat milk in place of high-fat ingredients. Substitute non-fat yogurt or applesauce for oil in baked goods.

7. Roast or Grill for Rich Flavor With Fewer Calories

Roasting or grilling meat, seafood, vegetables, and potatoes, is a simple, low-calorie cooking style that brings out the natural sweetness and flavor in foods.

Roasted sweet potatoes with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar and a spritz of butter spray are delicious substitutes for the traditional calorie-laden casserole.

Grilled pork chops served with a mango salsa are great to replace pork chops slathered in mushroom cream.

8. Serve Healthier Desserts

For dessert, try chocolate-dipped strawberries for a colorful and delicious finale.

If you want to offer pie, choose the healthier pumpkin pie. Make it with non-fat evaporated milk. Top it with fat-free whipped topping.

9. Spritz Your Drinks

Eggnog and other holiday beverages can add a huge number of calories. Offer your guests plenty of low-cal beverages such as diet soda, sparkling water, or a low-calorie punch.

Alcohol releases inhibitions and can increase hunger. So do yourself and guests a favor: Offer simple alcohol choices such as wine and beer without the heavy cocktail mixers.

10. Plan and Scan to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

“In anticipation that you will be eating and drinking more than usual, try to trim your calories and make sure you fit in fitness everyday so you can enjoy a ‘controlled’ feast without the guilt” says Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, clinical assistant professor, Boston University and American Dietetic Association spokeswoman.

“Scan the buffet and fill your plate with foods that are simply prepared, without sauces or fried, sit down and take your time to taste and savor every bite,” she says. Resist the urge to go back for more by waiting at least 20 minutes for your brain to register that you are comfortably full. If you are still hungry, eat more vegetables and drink water.

Remember, the holidays are marked with many traditions, but the real meaning is about spending time with family and friends.

If you keep these tips in mind, you'll get through the holidays without gaining a pound. And if you do splurge, don't beat yourself up, the experts say. Just get right back to normal eating and exercising, and try to do a better job at the next party.

So, that's it! It sounds easy but if you do put it into practise let us all know how you fared.

See you again tomorrow!

Mineral Makeup

Thursday 17th December 2009

Wouldn't it be great if you could wear your make up all day without it smudging or fading as you went about your daily routine? Have you ever been out in the sun and felt your makeup melting. or have you been caught short in a rain storm and had your previously made up face washed away?

What if I were to tell you that there was a certain type of makeup out there that had the staying power of a red wine stain on your lush cream carpet... and that it was called mineral makeup.

Mineral makeup has actually been around for about thirty years, but is seeing a sudden surge in popularity with those who are keen to buy all natural, non chemical products. Unlike other make ups, mineral makeup is made from just natural ground minerals with no preservatives, no chemical dyes, perfumes, talc's or alcohol.

As you may have already gathered, mineral makeup is perfect for those who have sensitive skin or common skin complaints such as acne.

We asked a number of makeup artists to say how they liked mineral makeup compared to the more conventional products, and the vast majority agreed that mineral makeup was so much lighter (making it easier to apply) and it gave a tremendous glow and a fresher, more natural finish.

How effective is mineral makeup.

Mineral makeup consists of triple milled minerals like titanium, gold, zinc, magnesium and aluminum. These special minerals are great for skin, because they do not enhance wrinkles and fine lines. It is also known that mineral make up has a SPF rating of 15 (for great sun protection) due to the high content of zinc oxide and titanium, making it a great way to wear sun block for the face.

Mineral makeup is also hypoallergenic and will not clog your pores. It also nourishes the skin and is very easy to apply and remove. The best thing about mineral make up is that it is strongly developed and it is natural, that it last so long that you can actually sleep in it and still appear fresh and ready to go when you awake in the morning!

There are some people that have complained about mineral make up stating that it irritates their skin and adds years to their appearance and also causes more wrinkles. Mineral makeup may not be for everyone and some people have different reactions to certain types of makeup and certain types of minerals. It is best if you try different types of make-up to see what is right for you, the most popular form of mineral makeup is blushes and powder foundations. Mineral make up is great for the majority of men and women and usually enhances your natural look and gives you a fresh and redefined look.

If you would like to see a fabulous range of mineral make up then please take the time to pay a visit to our friends over at Ferro Cosmetics.

See you again tomorrow for our final Christmas gift idea!

The Mediterranean Diet

Wednesday 16th December 2009

The Mediterranean diet has long been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, problems with circulation, and all round good health. The diet, based on the style of eating in Southern European countries such as Spain and Italy, is defined by plentiful amounts of olive oil, more fish than meat, a low intake of dairy produce and lots of fruit and vegetables. Unusually, the Mediterranean diet also encourages the drinking of alcohol (red wine) in moderation.

Research scientists are not quite sure why the Mediterranean style of eating is linked to the afore mentioned health benefits, but one reason is thought to be the low levels of saturated fats it contains. Saturated fats are found in produce such as butter, cheese and red meat. Secondly the diet also has higher levels of mono unsaturated fatty acids(found) In olive oil and the fatty acids that are also abundant in certain types of fish.

It is know that the Mediterranean countries have lower rates of depression and suicide than those in northern Europe and some studies have suggested that the diet also has links with this. More recently researchers have found that those who's diets were strongly associated with the Mediterranean way of eating were less likely to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety related disorders.

The results of this research has concluded that the amount of fruit, vegetables and legumes, as well as the types of oils and fats that are consumed does in fact have links to lower rates of depression. Although they have reasoned that the overall effects of the diet may be more important than singling out individual foods or food groups.

If you are wanting to change your current diet to mimic that of the Mediterranean style then here are the things that you are going to need to change.

  • Maximise your intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grain cereals

  • Limit your red meat intake and replace it with fish and poultry

  • Use olive oil instead of butter or lard

  • Limit your intake of processed and 'fast food'

  • Eat only moderate amounts of dairy and use low fat versions wherever possible

  • Snack on fruit, (including dried) fruit and unsalted nuts

  • Never add salt to your food at the table. There's already plenty.

  • Drink red wine during your meals, but no more than two small glasses per day

  • Drink more water, at least six glasses a day.

The Mediterranean diet incorporates the intake of health promoting ingredients while minimising those ingredients that are though to be bad for you. Those who adopt the Mediterranean style of eating are less likely to suffer illness and disease than those who do not.

Research has shown an exceptional reduction in risks of premature death, cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, arthritis and type 2 diabetes.

Adoption of the Mediterranean diet has also proven to be a successful strategy in the battle against weight loss.

If you click on the image at the top of this page you will see an enlarged version of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid which shows you how often food groups in this specific diet should be consumed.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask them!

See you again tomorrow.

The Secret To Being Insanely Creative

Tuesday 15th December 2009

As you all know, Tuesdays are reserved for Guest Bloggers but this week I had a Twitter friend of mine send me a link to this brilliant blog post and I would like to share it with you:

What’s the secret to unleashing your creativity?

I’ll tell you, but it’s not what you think…

As an aspiring artist, I’ve spent a lot of time trying figure out how to be more creative. I’ve explored the traditional paths to creativity; painting, drawing, playing an instrument, creative writing, poetry, etc. I connected with creative souls; artists, and people living off the grid (away from the mainstream).

While I found this sparked my creative spirit, it only went so far. I was hacking at the branches rather than the root.

To truly tap into your creative nature, you only have to realize one thing…

You are already an artist.

You don’t have to create exquisite sculptures or breathtaking sonnets. You’re creating all the time simply by being alive. Every decision you make, every time you move, breathe, or speak you are creating. In fact, you couldn’t not create even if you wanted to. It’s simply impossible.

Just think about it: you’re the main character in your life story. Each day you develop and further the plot of your masterful performance. You interact with other secondary characters in your story that support your role. These are your friends, your lover, family and coworkers. They’re the supporting actors or actresses in your drama, and they also help mold your life’s narrative.

You can change the course of your story at any time by making new choices and walking down new paths. You can drop a secondary character and choose new ones, if they’re not supporting the story you’d like to create (except, perhaps, family members).

You constantly direct the play called your life; and that makes you a magnificent artist. So if you’re creating your life all the time, wouldn’t it be more empowering to view yourself as an artist, rather than simply a passively living person?

I know you’re thinking, That really doesn’t help when I’m chopping celery or washing the cat… but it does. It makes all the difference.

See, when you know you’re creating artistically, you get more involved in your life. You start to live more deliberately. You wash your cat with love because deep down, you love him even if he smells terrible. You cut celery with joy, because you’re making the choice to put something healthy in your body.

So, enough foreplay; here are some practical ways to embrace your inner artist:

  • Work. Are you making choices to further your deepest desires? Are you moving in the direction of your dreams? Much of our lives are spent working, so it makes sense to be conscious of the career we create. Find a career that pays you for being you. You may have to create one if it doesn’t exist.
  • Money. Take a close look at where your money is going. Are you spending your money unconsciously? Are buying lattes and chasing trends keeping you from those yoga classes you’ve been meaning to take? Reevaluate how you spend to live by your own design.
  • Goals. Are the goals you have ego driven, or heart centered? Are they furthering the life you’d love to create? See where you can simplify and remove the clutter to create room for authentic endeavors.
  • Relationships. Are your relationships assisting you in your desires, or holding you back? Or perhaps YOU are holding yourself back. Be honest with yourself and make the necessary changes to fearlessly go with yourself (instead of against).
  • Information. Are you addicted to info porn? Who’s dictating what you should think, you or the media? Consciously decide the input you accept and discard that which doesn’t serve you.
  • Routine. Most of our days we’d consider normal. A random Tuesday spent watching TV game shows is more eventful than the day your spouse proposed to you. If most of our days are common, it makes sense to make the most out of them. Instead of focusing on how much you can accomplish, focus on how much you can absolutely love what you’re doing. Be there completely. While doing this, you’ll find that you naturally enjoy those seemingly tedious tasks much more (like washing the dishes). It’s amazing how much non-resistance and presence changes everything.

All life really is, after all, is a collection of stories. But you’re the only one that can create the story of your dreams. It’s your story.

So what do you want to create? A film noir or a fairy tale? You can choose a daring adventure or a comedy. It’s up to you as long as you accept that you’re the artist. You’ve got the brush, it’s up to you to put down the colors you like best.

The question is: What will you create?

This article was written by Zen Habits contributor Jonathan Mead.

Fabulous isn't it? Now you know why I wanted to she are it with you all. I hope you enjoyed it and maybe even helped you to get a new way of thinking.

See you tomorrow.

Lose Weight With Caralluma

Monday 14th December 2009

There is a new appetite suppressant in town and unlike the Hoodia ones that have been around for some time, this one is already patent protected and more importantly, clinically proven to suppress the appetite.

So, here is everything you need to know about Caralluma Fimbriata and how it can help you kick start your new years weight loss programme.

Caralluma fimbriata is a succulent plant of the cactus family that has been used as a natural appetite suppressant in India for centuries.

It's a new arrival in the family of cactii and succulent plants that are becoming increasingly popular for their appetite suppressant and weight loss properties, as well as their ability to lower blood sugar.

Supplements made from the popular hoodia gordonii cactus from the Kalahari Desert in Africa, are, for example, growing in popularity and usage in the U.S. and Europe. Like hoodia, caralluma fimbriata has been used to suppress appetite, and as a portable food for hunting. It is used to suppress hunger and appetite, and enhance endurance throughout India. It is also sometimes considered a "famine food," used during periods of famine to suppress appetite.

For centuries, people in rural areas of India have eaten Caralluma Fimbriata (see photograph), which grows wild over various parts of the country. Caralluma Fimbriata is cooked as a vegetable, used in preserves like chutneys and pickles, or eaten raw.

Caralluma Fimbriata is believed to block the activity of several enzymes, which then blocks the formation of fat, forcing fat reserves to be burned. Caralluma Fimbriata is also said to have an effect on the appetite control mechanism of the brain. Ayurvedic (traditional Indian medicine) experts have noted that there are no adverse effects when using Caralluma Fimbriata, and the plant has no known toxicity.

A patented, tested extract of Caralluma Fimbriata has been developed and standardized by a company called Gencor. Known as "Slimaluma," the extract delivers the plant in a concentrated form. One of the only products available in the U.S. that uses the Slimaluma formula is Country Life's GenaSlim supplement, which combines the patented Slimaluma extract of Caralluma fimbriata with EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) from green tea. Together they reportedly have a synergistic effect on appetite control and weight loss. In several clinical trials Slimaluma was shown to be effective in reducing body fat through appetite control.

If you are wanting a helping hand with losing a few extra pounds in the new year visit http://www.carallumaburn.com where you can also claim your two free bottles (see terms and conditions) of Carallum Burn. And with a no quibble money back guarantee it could be the answer to your weight loss prayers!

Causes Of Nail Fungus

Wednesday 9th December 2009

Following my post on Monday about nails and health, I received an email from a reader asking what the causes of nail fungus were and if I knew of any treatments for the condition.

Here is an answer to those questions, so Wendy this is for you and thanks for getting in touch.

Fungi are microscopic organisms that don't need sunlight to survive. Some fungi have beneficial uses, while others cause illness and infection.

Nail fungal infections are typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. But yeasts and molds also can be responsible for nail fungal infections. All of these microscopic organisms live in warm, moist environments, including swimming pools and showers. They can invade your skin through tiny invisible cuts or through a small separation between your nail and nail bed. They cause problems only if your nails are continually exposed to warmth and moisture — conditions perfect for the growth and spread of fungi.

Infection with nail fungus occurs more in toenails than in fingernails because toenails are often confined in a dark, warm, moist environment inside your shoes — where fungi can thrive. Another reason may be the diminished blood circulation to the toes as compared with the fingers, which makes it harder for your body's immune system to detect and eliminate the infection.

Nail Fungus Complications

Nail fungal infections can be painful and may cause permanent damage to your nails. They may also lead to other serious infections that can spread beyond your feet if you have a suppressed immune system due to medication, diabetes or other conditions.

Fungal infections of the nail pose the most serious health risk for people with diabetes and for those with weakened immune systems, such as people with leukemia or those who've had an organ transplant.

If you have diabetes, your blood circulation and the nerve supply to your feet can become impaired. Therefore, any relatively minor injury to your feet — including a nail fungal infection — can lead to a more serious complication, requiring timely medical care. See your doctor immediately if you suspect nail fungus.

As for treatments, I have done a little research and have found one product which has had rave reviews recently; a natural solution for healthier nails for more information on this product you can visit: http://www.zetaclear.com

That's everything from me today. thank you all for stopping by, as usual please feel free to leave your comments or drop me an email fay@beautyfactor.net.

Is Liposuction For Me

Tuesday 8th December 2009

Today we welcome our guest blogger Julia Eves who helps us take a closer look at the Liposuction procedure.

It sounds like some sort of a magic cure: Just make a small incision and suck out unwanted fat through a tube - a spiffy piece of body contouring that leaves you svelte and shapely. The good news is that this is pretty much what liposuction does, and its laser form, SmartLipo, is even called the 'lunch-time lipo'. Sneak out for a quick snack and some liposuction! But there may be serious, sometimes fatal, complications with liposuction; so you need to seriously consider whether it is worth it.

What areas does it work in?

Liposuction isn't an alternative to the gym: it's not a good idea if you're looking for extreme weight loss but does work well if you have some specific problem areas. A kind of body contouring, it can be performed under the chin, neck, cheeks, upper arms, breasts, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, calves, and ankle areas. Liposuction works best for people who don't lose or gain weight too quickly or have any eating disorders. Men usually opt for liposuction to remove double chins and abdominal fat; women for thighs, hips, lower abdomen and around the neck region. If you're opting for liposuction or SmartLipo you should ideally be healthy and have roughly normal body weight.

How is it done?

Liposuction is getting easier. The big cut that surgeons used to make has now been replaced by a tiny incision in a natural skin crease through which a hollow tube is inserted to suck out fat. The newer laser-based SmartLipo is even simpler. It involves inserting a tiny tube into the skin which then moves back and forth distributing the laser's energy to surrounding fat cells, which rupture and drain away. SmartLipo is a simple enough procedure to be performed under local anesthesia and is sometimes used along with regular liposuction to supplement it.

Is there a flip side?
Of course, now that you've been hearing about what a safe procedure it is, you'll probably be tempted to head out and ask for a helping of body contouring right away, please. But although liposuction is one of the safest cosmetic surgical procedures available today and may be advertised as something you can undergo when you have an hour free, you should make sure you speak to a realistic surgeon who doesn't overdo the amounts of liposuction performed on you in a single day. The amount that is considered "safe" varies, so it is important to check how much your surgeon prioritizes safety over results.

There are side-effects that may put you off liposuction and it's best to know these beforehand rather than discover them the hard way later. They include infections, skin necrosis (can be fatal) above the regions where liposuction was done; a change in the sensations in the operated region; swelling, and fluid imbalance.

Also if all that your surgeon has been discussing is the miracle body contouring that you will go home with post-surgery, you need to know that there are certain vulnerabilities you might have that increase risk during or after liposuction. For instance, what's your history with cardiac problems; pulmonary problems; hypertension; diabetes; allergies? After a surgery, are you okay with the chance that there might be some shock (if enough fluid wasn't pumped back into you after fat was sucked out); fluid overload, scarring, drug reactions or possibility of infection.

Liposuction: when not to

It's not a good idea to consider liposuction for general obesity or to treat skin that is uneven or dimpled. Your surgeon should warn you that certain parts of your body shouldn't undergo liposuction such as the fat on the sides of breasts - a common site for cancer. There are alternatives to liposuction and SmartLipo that you can consider: for instance, a tummy tuck procedure; reduction mammoplasty or even a combination of plastic surgery procedures.

What Your Nails Say About Your Health

Monday 7th December 2009

Most of us are already aware that our nails can hold vital clues about the state of our overall health, but most of us don't know what our nails are trying to tell us. Ripples and bumps, white specks, and a change in colour may all be signs of disease in the body. Keep reading to find out what your nails say about your health.

Pale Nails are often a sign associated with aging, but can also be a sign of illnesses such as Anemia, Diabetes, Liver disease or Malnutrition.

White Nails are often a sign of liver problems.

Yellow Nails are often a sign of a fungal infection. As the infection worsens the nail bed may retract and nails may thicken and begin to crumble.

Blue Nails or nails with a slight tint of blue about them show a lack of oxygen. This could be an indication of lung problems.

Rippled Nails If the surface of the nails is pitted or rippled this could be a sign of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis.

Brittle Nails that are dry and crack have been linked with thyroid disease. If the nails are brittle but with a hint of yellow then you may have a fungal disease.

Puffy Nail Fold If the area around the nail is red and swollen, then this is known as inflammation of the nail fold. It could be the result of lupus or another connective tissue disorder.

Dark Lines should be look at instantly by a medical professional as they are sometimes caused by melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Bitten Nails Gnawing at your nails may be nothing but a habit but in some cases it can be a sign of anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorders that may benefit from treatment.

Although we all have nails that change throughout our lives it may not necessarily mean we have one or more of the above health conditions, and of course we have to take into consideration other symptoms too. All in all, many nail abnormalities are not dangerous and are quite harmless.

Do You Have Asthma?

Thursday 3rd December 2009

Asthma is an increasingly common breathing problem, and it seems highly likely that you will know someone who suffers with it. The causes of asthma can vary from person to person as too can the symptoms.

I am an asthma sufferer myself, with the illness only flaring up during the winter months. Having a cold recently and suffering with Sinusitis probably triggered my asthma this time around.

So, how do you know if you have asthma or not? Here are some of the most common symptoms that you should be looking out for;

  • Coughing, especially at night
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness, pain, or pressure

Still, not every person with asthma has the same symptoms in the same way. You may not have all of these symptoms, or you may have different symptoms of asthma at different times. Your symptoms may also vary from one asthma attack to the next, being mild during one and severe during another.

Some people with asthma may go for extended periods without having any symptoms at all, interrupted by periodic worsening of their symptoms called asthma attacks. Others might have asthma symptoms every day. In addition, some people may only have asthma during exercise or asthma with viral infections like colds.

Mild asthma attacks are generally more common. Usually, the airways open up within a few minutes to a few hours. Severe attacks are less common but last longer and require immediate medical help. It is important to recognize and treat even mild symptoms to help you prevent severe episodes and keep asthma under better control.

Seven Ways To Feel Fitter And Healthier

Wednesday 2nd December 2009

If your new years resolution for 2010 is to get fitter and healthier (again), but all of the conflicting information out there is confusing you, here is a brilliant article that explains the seven things you need to do to feel better, fitter and happier about yourself.

Due to today's hectic modern lifestyle, many people are getting less exercise than they are used to. It also led them to making terrible compromises with their health, particularly on their food choices. The convenience presented by fast food meals and quick-cook meals became more preferred than quick fix greens and veggies. These unhealthy changes are starting to take toll on many people's lives, particularly on their health and fitness.

Health and fitness are two essential factors of living a quality life. That is why it is important to take certain measures in retaining health and fitness. Amidst the present challenges imposed by a hectic daily life, it is actually possible for you to maintain health and feel fitter and healthier than ever before.

1. Exercise plays crucial roles in maintaining health. Not only does it encourage normal body functions, it also helps establish more energy that will enable the body to sustain all your daily activities with no fail. By signing up to a fitness health centre, you gain help in making sure that your body gets enough exercise every day. To people who are dealing with existing medical conditions, they may benefit from the guidance of personal training staff to find the right exercises that will improve their current condition.

2. Along with your exercise fitness program, healthy dieting is essential to regaining fitness and health. Watching what you eat is important in lessening your intake of foods that trigger health problems such as saturated fat and complex sugars. Fitness experts recommend getting 8 servings of fruits and vegetables daily and 8 glasses of water per day. This should give your body enough fiber and fluid to hasten normal body system functions.

3. Achieving a natural state of deep relaxation is one way of effectively feeling fitter and healthier. Indulging to a relaxing massage or in methods like hypnosis, you encourage your body's transmission of positive energies, which improves the way you handle stresses and respond to certain situations.

4. Flexible exercises such as running, walking or jogging make great exercises. There's no problem when the opportunity presents only little physical activity. Doing little activities means a lot. Even doing simple housework or walking the dog is enough exercise.

5. Getting enough sleep, seven to eight hours, is a must. A well-rested body is a healthy body. Lack of sleep will not only make you less effective in the morning, it also weakens your immune system, which makes you susceptible to diseases.

6. Encourage positive outlook in life. Live your life to the fullest by taking great joys from simple things. For instance, if you want to achieve weight loss, appreciating, and celebrating every good change that you make in your lifestyle will keep you motivated in achieving your goal. That way, you will appreciate life, feeling fitter and healthier.

7. To undergo a rigorous and life-changing fitness program, consider joining a boot camp. Boot camps will enable you to achieve health and fitness with fun, fast, and effective ways. Boot camps offer to asset you in achieving all fitness levels, for all ages and abilities.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Diet.

Tuesday 1st December 2009

There are various theories about the cause of rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that inflames the joints in the body, causing pain and stiffness. It is not completely curable. In its advanced stages, rheumatoid arthritis makes the joints deformed and immobile, simultaneously affecting other organs, too. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that can affect anyone, any time, at any age. Since prevention is better than cure, a diet rich in nutrition, such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, is best recommended. In the case of arthritis, a good diet will help in keeping the disease under control, even though cure is a one percent chance.

As per the body requirements, a diet should be combination of every food in large, moderate, and small amounts followed by a regular exercise plan or a physically active lifestyle. The typical diet should contain vegetables and fruit, cereals, grains, bread, legumes and beans, skimmed milk, and oils that are low in saturated fats. Researchers have identified a diet rich in fish oil and a vegetarian diet as a good sources to combat rheumatoid arthritis. Moderate amounts of sugar and red meat trimmed of excess fat can also be included the diet. Though in some cases of rheumatoid arthritis more consumption of red meat has been identified as aggravating inflammation in the joints, small quantities are harmless.

The diet should also include minerals like calcium and iron, and vitamins like B and C. Also, the body weight should be always under control. This is because a person having rheumatoid arthritis may turn anemic, lose bone density, develop a fever, and develop other symptoms that body cannot withstand with the pain and stiffness. At such a time, weight gain will only increase inflammation and pain in the swollen joints.

Diet supplements such as calcium and folic acid are recommended, especially when taking medication. Drugs taken for rheumatoid arthritis may have side effects and can affect the normal status of the vitamins and minerals in the body. For instance, folic acid is administered with methotrxate a drug used to fight arthritis. Similarly, alcohol and other beverages such as coffee should be avoided when taking certain other drugs.

Thanks to http://myarthritisnotes.blogspot.com for this weeks guest blogger post, very useful and interesting don't you agree?

See you back here tomorrow.

What Is Cholesterol

Monday 30th November 2009

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a lipid found in the cell membranes of all tissues, and it is transported in the blood plasma of all animals.

Because cholesterol is synthesized by all eukaryotes, trace amounts of cholesterol are also found in membranes of plants and fungi.

The name originates from the Greek chole- (bile) and stereos (solid), and the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, as researchers first identified cholesterol in solid form in gallstones by François Poulletier de la Salle in 1769. However, it is only in 1815 that chemist Eugène Chevreul named the compound "cholesterine".

Most of the cholesterol is synthesized by the body and some has dietary origin. Cholesterol is more abundant in tissues which either synthesize more or have more abundant densely-packed membranes, for example, the liver, spinal cord and brain.

It plays a central role in many biochemical processes, such as the composition of cell membranes and the synthesis of steroid hormones. Cholesterol is insoluble in blood, but is transported in the circulatory system bound to one of the varieties of lipoprotein, spherical particles which have an exterior composed mainly of water-soluble proteins.

The main types, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) carry cholesterol from and to the liver.According to the lipid hypothesis, abnormally high cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) and abnormal proportions of LDL and HDL are associated with cardiovascular disease by promoting atheroma development in arteries (atherosclerosis).

This disease process leads to myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke and peripheral vascular disease. As high LDL contributes to this process, it is termed "bad cholesterol", while high levels of HDL ("good cholesterol") offer a degree of protection.

The balance can be redressed with exercise, a healthy diet, and sometimes medication.

What Can Aloe Vera Be Used For?

Thursday 26th November 2009

I know I have mentioned what a huge fan of Aloe Vera I am before, but when I received an email yesterday asking what it could be used for, I was delighted to be able to dedicated a whole post to my favorite plant and remedy.

Did you know that there are in excess of 150 Aloe Vera species? Originally a native plant of South America, it can be grown indoors or out, and the Aloe Vera is commonly used to treat skin burns and rashes. Over the last few years Aloe has also become a widely used ingredient in cosmetics, shampoos, lotions and a number of household products.

The healing properties of Aloe Vera comes from the 18 amino acids within the plant.

Used for centuries as a home remedy, natural Aloe Vera is an off white colour and can be obtained by simply breaking off a leaf which allows the liquid to run out. The leaves can also be crushed and used as a salve. It's most common use is as a sun burn soother but it can also be made into juices, gels and powders for all manner of purposes.

More recently Aloe Vera has been made into a capsule and has proven to be a great cure for constipation, some say it is helpful in the battle against acne, while most report that it adds a softness to the skin.

The health benefits of Aloe Vera range from treating digestive disorders to healing and treating burns, cuts and bruises. It’s strong anti inflammatory as well as its cool and soothing effect can bring instant relief to painful situations like bruises or scraping of the skin. Its role in the treatment of digestive disorders includes management of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, ulcers, Crohn’s disease, and even as a colon cleansing agent.

Aloe Vera essentially boosts our overall immune system and with its enormous anti bacterial, anti fungal and antibiotic properties, Aloe Vera works equally well with topic application as well as internal consumption.

While I use the plants in my own garden to treat scuffed knees, minor cuts and insect bites, I would not recommend digesting them.

Here are a few other ways to use the Aloe Vera plant extract;

  • Banish bruises by applying liberally to the affected area
  • Alleviate mysterious rashes
  • Take the itch out of insect bites
  • Fight athletes foot
  • Dab onto blisters for quick relief
  • Use as a general moisturiser for dry skin
  • Prevents scarring and stretchmarks
  • Shrinks warts
  • Helps against eczema
  • Decrease dark spots and pigmentation of the skin
  • Helps strong hair growth by rubbing onto the scalp and leaving for 30 minutes before rinsing
  • Removes eye make up
As I said this is just a few of the many ways that Aloe Vera can help you, and are all ways that I have successfully used my own plants.

Next week I am going to show you how to extract the liquid from your own Aloe Vera plants, so watch this space!

How To Lighten Your Hair With Lemon Juice

Wednesday 25th November 2009

First of all I would just like to confirm that yes, lemon juice will lighten your hair, but it will only work as a highlight to your natural hair colour. This means that if you have a dark brown hair you will get a lighter brown highlight, you will not become a blond. If you have black hair, it is very likely that using lemon juice will result in a red tint wherever you apply the juice.

Lemon juice does work best as a natural highlighter for blond or dull blond hair, and light brown hair can turn out some pretty impressive results too.

So, how does it work?

Well, the acid in the lemon juice simply acts as an accelerator. When you are sitting out in the sun your hair does get lighter gradually, and adding lemon juice to the equation just speeds up the whole process.

What do you need to do?

All you need to do is follow these five simple steps for great results.

1. There is no need to wash or wet your hair before you start, it is best to use unwashed/dirty hair.

2. Get yourself one fresh lemon, cut in in half and extract the juice. Use an electric juicer, or if you don't have one, squeeze the juice out by hand into a jug.

3. Add a small drop of water to your juice. For an even covering place the juice into a spray bottle and apply liberally to the hair. If you are just wanting highlights, wipe the mixture onto selected strands of hair using your fingertips remembering to get right down to the roots.

4. When you are happy with the coverage it's time to get outside into the sun. Please remember to apply sun screen before you go outside, you need to be out there for a good hour.

5. After spending time outside, come back indoors and rinse the lemon from your hair, you can then repeat the process if you would like to enhance the colour some more. Be aware that you may have to do this once or twice a day for a couple of days to get the maximum benefit.

The highlights you will achieve with this method are as permanent as those that you would expect from a salon. They will only grow out, so your roots will need the occasional touch up.

Using lemon juice to lighten the hair is a good, natural and cheaper alternative to getting chemical highlights. All you need is a little patience and your efforts will pay off.

If you have done this in the past, or are trying it out for the first time, let everyone else know how it worked for you by leaving a comment.

See you again tomorrow when we find out just how useful Aloe Vera can be.

Eat To Boost Fertility

Tuesday 24th November 2009

It is guest blogger time again so please welcome todays guest blogger Omo Franca who has written a brilliant blog on the topic of fertility and conception, babyfertile.blogspot.com, so make sure you pay it a visit.

EAT TO BOOST FERTILITY!

Having trouble getting pregnant? Experts now believe that following the right diet could be the single most important factor for successful conception.

A Spanish study recently found that men could boost their sperm counts by eating less red meat and fatty food, and more fruit and veg.

Meanwhile, research at Harvard University also found that women who made dietary changes reduced their risk of infertility by as much as 80%.
“The food choices you and your partner make can have a major effect on improving fertility,” agrees fertility expert Dr Zita West, whose client list includes actresses Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett and Davina McCall.

Here are the foods you – and your partner – need to eat...
How to do it:
The first step to better fertility is to ensure you have a balanced diet and don’t cut out any major food groups. “Make sure you both get adequate protein from lean meat and fish, essential fats from fish, nuts and seeds, wholemeal carbohydrates and lots fruit and veg,” says Zita.
Once you have the basics right you can then add the specific superfoods that researchers have found can boost egg and sperm production. But be patient: you will both need to stick to a diet plan for at least three months before you will know if it has had any effect.

Here’s what you should be eating...

For him
Oily fish.
This is the best source of essential fatty acids (EFAs), omega-3 and omega-6 oils – all of which are vital for sperm development. They also enhance sperm quality and mobility.* Eat: Salmon, mackerel and sardines are all types of oily fish. Men should eat between one and four portions a week.
Oysters.A great source of zinc, which is needed to make the outer layer and tail of the sperm. Nutritionists believe just 15mg a day can help repair sperm that have been damaged by chemicals absorbed from the environment.

* Eat: If you can’t stomach or afford oysters, you’ll find plenty of zinc in beans, nuts, seeds and eggs.

Garlic. This is a great source of selenium, an antioxidant, which helps maintain strong healthy sperm.* Eat: Add chopped garlic to stir-fries, pasta sauces and curries. Garlic breath may not be very romantic but it can be easily neutralised by chewing a little parsley afterwards.

Spinach. This and other leafy greens are rich in folate, which improves sperm production. A study by the University of California found men with high intakes of this nutrient had up to 30% healthier sperm.

* Eat: Steam spinach lightly with garlic and chilli or eat it raw in a healthy salad.

Avocados.A rich source of vitamin E, which improves the quality of sperm. Avocados are also an excellent way to absorb unsaturated fats, which are crucial for healthy hormone function.

* Eat: Make your own guacamole as a dip for carrot sticks. Scoop flesh out of a couple of avocados and mash it up, adding a little garlic and lemon juice.

For her
Full-fat dairy. A fertility study by Harvard University found women who eat at least one serving of full-fat dairy a day reduce their risk of infertility by more than a quarter. It’s thought that the fat in dairy helps improve ovarian function.

* Eat: Consider changing low-fat dairy foods for full-fat while you are in the process of trying for a baby. A glass of milk a day is plenty.

Water. If you don’t drink enough water the reproductive system will lose out as the body ensures that the most vital organs receive the water that they need first.Water is needed for plump egg follicles and a strong blood supply to the womb lining. If you’re dehydrated, your cervical fluid (the stuff that helps the sperm find the egg) also becomes sluggish.

* Drink: Aim to have about eight glasses per day. Try mixing water with fruit juice or a squirt of lemon to liven it up.

Orange fruit and vegetables. Peaches, apricots, carrots and mangoes all contain beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A and which helps to produce the female sex hormones important for ovulation.

* Eat: Start the day with a mango and peach smoothie, and have a bag of chopped carrots to snack on at work.

Chicken.Getting enough protein is vital for egg production. Meat is the best source of protein but go for chicken rather than red meat – as it is much lower in fat.

* Eat: Women need about 45g of protein a day but don’t have more than this. As Zita West warns: “High-protein diets aren’t good in the lead-up to pregnancy, as there’s evidence that ammonia, a by-product of excessive protein, may interfere with embryo implantation.”

Oily fish, nuts and seeds. These are all extremely rich in essential fatty acids, which are crucial for healthy ovulation. According to Zita, eight out of 10 women are currently deficient in EFAs.

* Eat: You need to eat about 30g of nuts and seeds a day – enjoy them as a snack, sprinkle them on your cereal or mix into a healthy salad. Also try to eat about 300g – or roughly two portions – of oily fish a week.

Antioxidant levels key to prostate cancer risk

Monday 23rd November 2009

Antioxidant levels key to prostate cancer risk in some men?

Greater levels of selenium, vitamin E and the tomato carotenoid lycopene have been shown to reduce prostate cancer in one out of every four Caucasian males, or those who inherit a specific genetic variation that is particularly sensitive to oxidative stress, say US researchers.

Conversely, if carriers of this genetic variant have low levels of these vitamins and minerals, their risk of aggressive prostate increases substantially, as great as 10-fold, over those who maintain higher levels of these nutrients, they write in today’s issue of Cancer Research.

"This large prospective study provides further evidence that oxidative stress may be one of the important mechanisms for prostate cancer development and progression, and adequate intake of antioxidants, such as selenium, lycopene and vitamin E, may help prevent prostate cancer," said Dr Haojie Li, a researcher at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

The new findings are based on an analysis of 567 men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1982 and 1995, and 764 cancer-free men from the Physicians Health Study.

The initial goal of this study was to assess the effect of aspirin and beta-carotene on men's health. Li’s team decided to check for variants of the gene that codes for manganese superoxide dismutatase (MnSOD), an important enzyme that works as an antioxidant in human cells to defend against disease.

The MnSOD gene is passed from parents to offspring in one of three forms: VV, VA or AA.

"Compared with men with the MnSOD VV or VA genotype, people with the AA genotype seem to be more sensitive to the antioxidant status," said Li. "Men with the AA genotype are more susceptible to prostate cancer if their antioxidant levels are low."

The study's results found that a quarter of the men in the study carried the MnSOD AA genotype, half carried the VA genotype, and the remaining quarter carried the VV genotype.

The results indicated that the VA and VV men were at equivalent risk for developing prostate cancer across all levels of antioxidants in their blood.

But compared to MnSOD VV or VA carriers in the lowest quartile of selenium levels, MnSOD AA males had an 89 per cent greater risk for developing aggressive prostate cancer if they had low blood levels of the mineral.

On the other hand, MnSOD AA carriers with high selenium – those men in the highest quartile – had a 65 per cent lower risk than the MnSOD VV or VA males who maintained low levels of selenium.

"The levels of selenium in the highest quartile of these men are not abnormally high," Li said. "Our range is neither extremely high nor extremely low."

While similar trends were observed for lycopene and vitamin E when tested independently, the contrast in relative risk was most pronounced for the men who had high blood levels for all three antioxidants combined, said the researchers.

"Among men with the MnSOD AA genotype, we observed a 10-fold difference in risk for aggressive prostate cancer, when comparing men with high versus low levels of antioxidants combined,"said Li. "In contrast, among men with the VV or VA genotype, the prostate cancer risk was only weakly altered by these antioxidant levels."

"Our study, as well as many other epidemiological studies, encourages dietary intake of nutrients such as lycopene from tomato products, or supplements for vitamin E and selenium to reduce risk of prostate cancer," said Li.

Prostate cancer is one of the biggest cancer killers in industrial countries and affects more than 500,000 men worldwide every year. This number is expected to increase with the ageing population.

Similar interactions between dietary antioxidants and the variations in the MnSOD gene have previously been linked to risk for breast cancer.
