How To Sleep Better

Monday 3rd May 2010

Good morning. I trust you all has a good weekend!

I'd like to kick this new week off by showing you this great article I found, let me know what you think!

We pay a high price for getting an insufficient amount of sleep, individually and as a society. Lack of sleep is directly linked to poor health, with new research suggesting it increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Quit smoking. Smoking has a tendency to cause the muscles around your airway to become overly relaxed and more likely to collapse as you sleep.

Sleep experts say that we need 8 hours of sleep per night. However, the latest research shows that women average 6 hours and forty minutes of sleep during the week and 7 hours on the weekend. Besides the extra work that women have to contend with (helping with homework, laundry, cooking, etc.) and the many concerns that keep them from sleep, women are also be kept awake by - small children who wake during the night, teenagers coming home late, aging parents who get up during the night.

Stress and sleep deprivation is like a classic chicken and egg debate. Is stress the one causing your insomnia or is lack of sleep to blame for your anxieties? Whatever the answer to this problem is, you need to look deeper into your life. Try to determine which is causing your stress. Once you have learned what is making you anxious, the best thing to do is to keep away from it. However, if your family, friends or work is the one causing you to lose sleep, you cannot simply ignore it. Thus, talking with someone, like a professional shrink, could help you deal with your problems.

But just because your partner snores doesn't mean that he has sleep apnea. For a positive diagnosis to be made there has to be periods of cessation of breathing during the sleep. This diagnosis can be confirmed by an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram. These are usually carried out in special sleep laboratories where you are monitored by special equipment as well as a sleep technician. The first step in getting one of these tests arranged is to visit your doctor.

With all of the materiel on hand, and the pattern before me, I set out to construct the best sleeping bag possible. My wife was not to happy as I managed to break every sewing machine needle in the house. A trip to town for more, and many hours later, the best ever sleeping bag lay on the kitchen table for all to see. The amazing part of this exercise was that I had never used a sewing machine in my life.

Make sure, when it's all said and done, that you leave something for your child to do! You might want to place a pile of "rubble"--blocks, dominoes or whatever--near one of the buildings. Or leave one or two of the buildings unfinished. For a little added insurance provide a house friendly sand-box, also on the edge of town. To do this, place different size cups on a baking sheet. Fill one of the cups with sand and leave some measuring spoons next to it.

Alli is a diet supplement it is not a cure all. In order to successfully lose weight you must be committed to make a change in your eating habits and exercise routine. The key to a healthy eating plan is to eat small meals frequently and to replace some higher fat foods with lower fat varieties. If you do this the side effects of Alli should be minimal. Most people who complain about the harsh side effects are not doing enough to change their eating habits and replacing what they normally eat with lower fat foods.

Seven Ways To Feel Fitter And Healthier

Wednesday 2nd December 2009

If your new years resolution for 2010 is to get fitter and healthier (again), but all of the conflicting information out there is confusing you, here is a brilliant article that explains the seven things you need to do to feel better, fitter and happier about yourself.

Due to today's hectic modern lifestyle, many people are getting less exercise than they are used to. It also led them to making terrible compromises with their health, particularly on their food choices. The convenience presented by fast food meals and quick-cook meals became more preferred than quick fix greens and veggies. These unhealthy changes are starting to take toll on many people's lives, particularly on their health and fitness.

Health and fitness are two essential factors of living a quality life. That is why it is important to take certain measures in retaining health and fitness. Amidst the present challenges imposed by a hectic daily life, it is actually possible for you to maintain health and feel fitter and healthier than ever before.

1. Exercise plays crucial roles in maintaining health. Not only does it encourage normal body functions, it also helps establish more energy that will enable the body to sustain all your daily activities with no fail. By signing up to a fitness health centre, you gain help in making sure that your body gets enough exercise every day. To people who are dealing with existing medical conditions, they may benefit from the guidance of personal training staff to find the right exercises that will improve their current condition.

2. Along with your exercise fitness program, healthy dieting is essential to regaining fitness and health. Watching what you eat is important in lessening your intake of foods that trigger health problems such as saturated fat and complex sugars. Fitness experts recommend getting 8 servings of fruits and vegetables daily and 8 glasses of water per day. This should give your body enough fiber and fluid to hasten normal body system functions.

3. Achieving a natural state of deep relaxation is one way of effectively feeling fitter and healthier. Indulging to a relaxing massage or in methods like hypnosis, you encourage your body's transmission of positive energies, which improves the way you handle stresses and respond to certain situations.

4. Flexible exercises such as running, walking or jogging make great exercises. There's no problem when the opportunity presents only little physical activity. Doing little activities means a lot. Even doing simple housework or walking the dog is enough exercise.

5. Getting enough sleep, seven to eight hours, is a must. A well-rested body is a healthy body. Lack of sleep will not only make you less effective in the morning, it also weakens your immune system, which makes you susceptible to diseases.

6. Encourage positive outlook in life. Live your life to the fullest by taking great joys from simple things. For instance, if you want to achieve weight loss, appreciating, and celebrating every good change that you make in your lifestyle will keep you motivated in achieving your goal. That way, you will appreciate life, feeling fitter and healthier.

7. To undergo a rigorous and life-changing fitness program, consider joining a boot camp. Boot camps will enable you to achieve health and fitness with fun, fast, and effective ways. Boot camps offer to asset you in achieving all fitness levels, for all ages and abilities.

7 Winter Skin Care Tips

Tuesday 3rd November 2009

Good morning! This week we welcome back Lorynne from Caribbean Tan as our guest blogger. Here we have a fantastic post with seven tips on how to avoid dry winter skin.

As winter looms ahead, we brace our minds, bodies and souls for the harsh, frosty cold.

Our wardrobe morphs from skimpy, bare-it-all summer attire to the layers and layers of thermal wear that winter requires.

Salads and mocha frappes are replaced with hearty, traditional stews and filling, creamy, hot food. The fans are packed away, the fireplace is stacked with wood, the radiators turned on for good.

__

While we concentrate on warming ourselves, most of us forget that our skin regime needs just as much attention. Just as our clothes and diet change from season to season so should our skin care. Winter can be exceptionally cruel to our skin; the constant changes between warm and cold air both lacking in humidity can cause our skin to lose moisture and become dry and chapped, left vulnerable to infection.

Whilst there are creams and lotions available that can help return the moisture to our skin, dermatologists recommend the following to prevent your skin losing its moisture in the first place.

1. Keep well hydrated. Whilst it is common belief that we should drink 2L of water a day, there are certain factors that need to be taken into account to calculate your personal water consumption such as altitude, physical activity, weight, and health. Try this Hydration Calculator. To maintain great hydration limit your intake of caffeine, alcohol and especially limit smoking.

2. Use sun block. It is becoming common knowledge that the sun can be just as severe, and at times even more so, in Winter as in Summer. Good UV protection is recommended all year round.

3. Use quality lip balms and lip moisturisers at least 3 times per day to lock moisture into soft, vulnerable lips.

4. Creams and lotions containing petrolatum, mineral oil, linoleic acid, ceramides, dimethicone or glycerin will help fight off dry, patchy skin.

5. Hands can take a bit of a beating in Winter and hangnails can be very painful. Remember to use moisturiser after every wash. A great tip for keeping your cuticles well moisturised is using manicure gloves when you sleep; cover cuticles in Vaseline, place hands in manicure gloves, and remove in the morning. Works well for feet too, with pedicure covers.

6. Avoid hot showers and baths. Rather use lukewarm water. Pat yourself dry instead of rubbing and moisturise within three minutes.

7. Eyes can be particularly sensitive to dry, warm air. Keep your eyes clear and moist with moisture drops.

How To Perform A Breast Self Examination

Wednesday 21st October 2009

Although doctors recommend that women begin practicing breast self-exams (BSE) at age 20, many are still unaware of how important this procedure is to their heath. As 1 in 9 women will develop breast cancer, early detection is the best way to fight the disease. The key is to notice tumors before they grow to be potentially deadly; a BSE carefully searches the breasts for signs of these tumors.

A special advisory group of doctors created standard procedures for a BSE to assist women in becoming 'breast aware.' This awareness refers to knowing your normal breast fully, and being more likely to notice a change that could be cancerous. Naturally, the breasts will change overtime, and regular self-examinations can help decide what is normal and what is a concern.

While there is no definition for a normal breast, you should know the symptoms that a BSE searches for.
  • A lump or bumpy area in the breast or armpit
  • A noticeable change in outline or shape of the breast
  • A non-milky nipple discharge, or an inverted nipple
  • A dimpling, scaling or discolouration of the skin around the breast
A breast self-exam is recommended every month a few days after your period ends. By searching improperly, you may miss a tumor! Not every cancer can be located in this way, but a BSE is a critical step for becoming 'breast aware.' The earlier you begin regular exams, abnormalities will be less difficult to discover. For women who find tumors in their early stages, 80% will survive.

First, examine your breasts in a mirror with the arms both lowered and raised; search for the visible symptoms described above. Next, feel your breasts while lying down. Using a firm and smooth touch cover the entire breast from the collarbone to the top of the abdomen, and from the armpit to cleavage. Breasts often have different zones where tumors can occur ...be sure to examine them all.

If you find a lump or one of the other named symptoms, consult your GP as soon as possible. Remember, early discovery is the best way to combat breast cancer.

In this video Dr Chris shows you how to check your breasts for any possible signs of growths or other symptoms.
